The HQC and BHHO Update For 2024

Published Fri 09 Feb 2024

After consultation and feedback from a range of stakeholders, Hockey Queensland has made the decision to remove the Big Hockey Hit Out (BHHO) from the events calendar.

In 2024, the Hockey Queensland Championship (HQC) will serve as the selection event for the Brisbane Blaze Train On Squads, the extended U21 Queensland Squads, and the Queensland Country Teams.

This decision, made by the Hockey Queensland High Performance Committee and supported by the Hockey Queensland office, took into consideration a review of the 2022 and 2023 events, player and coach feedback, High Performance program parameters, financial constraints and Association interests.

All players wishing to be considered for selection in the 2024 QLD Country, 2024 Brisbane Blaze and 2025 QLD U21 Squads will be required to compete in the Hockey Queensland Championship or seek an exemption as per HQ Selection Policy.

Brisbane Blaze

The Hockey Queensland Championship will be the main selection event for the 2024 Blaze Train On Squads. The squad selected will maintain the ability to be added to or deleted from, based upon performances of all available athletes until the date required for submission of final Hockey One Squads. The number of athletes in the final Blaze Squad will be determined and communicated by Hockey One based on guidelines for the 2024 season.

U21 QLD Teams

The Hockey Queensland Championship will be a talent identification event for U21 male and female athletes. Athletes identified from this event will be added to the QLD U21 Squads for consideration in future trials and competitions for selection in the 2025 QLD U21 Teams.

QLD Country Teams

Nominations have opened for the QLD Country teams. Please note the updated eligibility criteria. The nomination form and further information about the eligibility can be found here: www.hockeyqld.com.au/events/226252
