The Hockey Queensland Championship (HQC) Women Wrap Up 2025
Published Mon 02 Jun 2025
The Hockey Queensland Championship (Women) has finished after another successful weekend at the State Hockey Centre in Brisbane.
It was a star-studded event with many former Hockeyroos competing and coaching against some up and coming young stars.
Very wet weather on Saturday caused delays, but the day still culminated in semi-finals where Maryborough beat Cairns, and the Gold Coast beat Tweed.
On Sunday, Tweed’s extensive experience outclassed Cairns who were also finished without a bench to call upon – an impressive feat.
In the Grand Final Gold Coast came out strong, and a final quarter penalty stroke and conversion weren’t enough for Maryborough to come back.
The last time Maryborough Open Women were in a Grand Final was in 1984 when they tied with Brisbane, and before this 1961 when they tied with Bundaberg. In 2019, the Wide Bay team won the Poligras Super League, which was a culmination of Bundaberg, Maryborough, Hervey Bay, Gympie and Sunshine Coast.
Thank you to all of the players, team staff, officials, volunteers, commentators and spectators who made the weekend a huge success.
The Women’s Country Team, U21 Squads and Blaze Squads will be named in the coming week.
