Leonie Young retires from Umpiring at National level

Published Fri 02 Oct 2020

Leonie Young, Australian Umpire from the Ipswich Association has decided to retire from umpiring at National Tournaments.  Leonie has been umpiring locally and at State and National Championships for a number of years with Leonie’s biggest accomplishment of being awarded her Australian Badge at the Under 21 Tournament in 2006 where she umpired the Grand Final with fellow Queenslander Kerryl Brown (nee Chandler).

Leonie’s career of Umpiring at National Tournaments is listed below.  To say that Leonie had a long and yet frustrating career with injuries would be an understatement.  Leonie’s first National Tournament was Under 15’s in 2016 and 10 years later after moving along the Pathway ladder and then having to re-start again, Leonie reached one of her major goals.

Leonie has also been an Umpire Coach at State Tournaments and holds a Level 1 Umpire Coach accreditation.  Leonie also works as an Umpire Mentor for Hockey Queensland and Ipswich.  In 2019 Leonie had the role of Umpire Development Co-Ordinator in Ipswich and was Assistant Umpire Coach at the states Super League alongside International Umpire Manager, Lynn Cowie-McAlister.

Hockey Queensland and the HQ Umpire Committee wish to acknowledge Leonie’s achievements and involvement in Umpiring over her career and look forward to Leonie continuing her involvement as an Umpire Coach at our future State Championships.
