Hockey Queensland is thrilled to announce their latest award recipient for service to hockey in Queensland.
The award was announced and awarded at the recent Hockey Queensland Annual General Meeting in conjunction with the Open State Championships in Brisbane.
Hockey Queensland congratulates and thanks Gil, an incredible member of our community, for his dedication to our sport.
Life Membership – Gil Voysey
Association – Men’s Masters / Brisbane
Mr Voysey is a true servant of the game, commencing with what was the Wests Hockey Club as a child in Brisbane, before joining his father at the Eastern Suburbs Hockey Club in Brisbane where he is still an active playing member more than 50 years later.
He has had a distinguished playing career and has represented Brisbane and Queensland in the under 21’s and consistently at Master’s level over the past 35 years, but it is for his contribution as an administrator at Club, at local, and State level, that he awarded.
Gil has provided over 35 years of service to Master’s hockey at Club, Association, State and national level and made a positive impact in each of those spheres. The vibrant and successful nature of Master’s Hockey in Brisbane, at State and National level is a testament to the contribution that Gil has made. The growth of the sport at Master’s level in Queensland and nationally is directly attributable to the successful competitions that Gil has overseen and the creation and hosting of events, most notably the over 60’s competition where players nominate as individuals and are placed in a team.
Known for his motto of “just wanting to give a bloke a game of hockey”, Gil has fully embraced the role hockey can game play in the social and emotional wellbeing of older men and women. He is known within the Brisbane, Queensland, and Australian hockey community as one of its elders, being a true custodian of the sport and its traditions.
Gil is always to the fore in the organisation of events and the sensible application of rules to ensure the spirit, rather than the letter of the law, takes precedence and permeates proceedings to maximise participation and enjoyment. He is known for his quiet presence, ability to engage with others, his pragmatic approach to getting things done and his ability to mediate opposing parties to reach a mutually beneficial outcome.
