FIH Regulation Update – Jewellery and Watches

Published Thu 28 May 2026

Hockey Queensland wishes to advise of a recent change regarding the wearing of jewellery and watches during matches.

Following updated FIH regulations, players are not permitted to wear jewellery or watches during matches. Hockey Australia has adopted this position within its National Championships regulations, and Hockey Queensland will also adopt the same approach to ensure consistency across the sport and to reduce the risk of injury or harm to players, with player safety remaining the priority.

The implementation of this directive will apply effective immediately for all Hockey Queensland events, including State Championships and Challenge events.

Hockey Queensland also recommends that Associations consider adopting this position across their local competitions and sanctioned hockey activities where appropriate.

In summary, the position adopted by Hockey Queensland is that:

  • players must not wear jewellery or watches during matches;
  • any jewellery that cannot be removed should be appropriately covered;
  • competition regulations should be updated where required to reflect this position.

This approach is intended to ensure alignment with the FIH and Hockey Australia position, while reducing confusion for players, coaches, officials and competition administrators.
