Community Spotlight: A Fantastic Four Weeks of Fun, Fitness, and Hockey Community Spirit

Published Tue 31 Mar 2026

The past month has seen an exciting new chapter for social hockey in Rockhampton, with a four‑week walking hockey program that brought together former players, current players from other divisions, and people completely new to the sport.

What started as a simple idea to create a welcoming, low‑pressure environment for hockey, quickly grew into a vibrant weekly gathering full of energy, laughter, and connection. Each Friday morning, the pitch came alive as players were placed into three teams of five.

Over 90 minutes, teams rotated through short, fast‑paced 12‑minute games, with one team resting and others helping with umpiring duties.

To keep things fun and accessible, the rules were kept simple. The pitch was set up on a quarter field with small goals, which proved to be a surprisingly enjoyable challenge. The focus wasn’t on competition, it was on movement, teamwork, and plenty of laughs. And of course, no session was complete without the final 30 minutes, morning tea. This became a highlight, thanks to the talented bakers in the group (and a few helpful local bakeries).

What’s Next? The response from players was overwhelmingly positive, with many eager to keep the momentum going. As a result, new sessions will start the Friday after Easter.
