Volunteer
PETER SMITH - BRISBANE WOMEN
BWHA has for over 10 years provided Division 1 match footage, through HockeyZone and now briZHockey. The plan in 2020 was no different. When we resumed sport in July 2020, our producer Paul Mills was in NSW and unable to come to Brisbane to set-up and organise weekly broadcasting, thankfully volunteer commentator Peter Smith stepped into the breach.
Peter was instrumental in keeping hockey on live stream, at a time when people needed a diversion and live sport, and when numbers at venues where limited. Peter helped with the planning, set-up and commentating for our shortened 12 week season, with no fanfare or fuss. It is volunteers like Peter who simply get on with the job when faced with adversity and we believe he is worthy of this recognition.
JULES SAMUELS - SUNSHINE COAST (BUDERIM REBELS)
Jules was the secretary of Buderim Rebels Hockey Club. Jules managed the Div 2 men's team, assisted as needed to manage numerous other club teams. She organised club duty, canteen duty and numerous other requirements beyond what is necessary for a club secretary. Jules was a contact person for new enquiries and has referred new players to other clubs when Rebels have been at capacity to ensure everyone gets to play the game they love. Jules has been a representative on the SCHA competitions committee, and a valid member of the SCHA Technical Panel. She also volunteers for Tech duties at representative level on behalf of SCHA. Jules assisted SCHA with various aspects of facility maintenance and support in other areas.
EMMA ZIVIANI - TOOWOOMBA
Some of Emma's roles at THA are opening the fields, match directing and upskilling new Match Directors, attending Committee and HQ Meetings, organises Representative trials, coaches, managers and players, ensures the THA is financial and can improve facilities, conduct educational programs and continue to operate sustainably.
Emma drives all fundraising efforts and organises sponsors, and volunteers.
Emma also encourages new people to join clubs who are short in a particular division/age group to ensure that the association has sufficient numbers to play a competition across all age groups.
Emma is on the Toowoomba Hockey Committee and holds the Finance and Representative portfolios. Emma helps with the management of the association's members, ensuring all are registered, playing the required number of games and the development of all players.
Emma organised a number of clinics for all junior age groups in 2020, which included special guests including Matt Wells and Karen Robertson. Also included in this was umpire education.
Emma embodies the #TEAMQLD values and behaviours and could not be a more supportive role model for all THA members and volunteers. Emma promotes and represents these values for Toowoomba and Queensland at all events.
ADAM TRONSON - TOWNSVILLE
Adam is very passionate about the growth of Hockey in Townsville. Adam assists in every exposure event that Townsville Hockey participates in and is a major advocate for building a family culture in hockey. Adam assists Townsville Hockey to run programs including Goalkeeper Development, Officiating and Umpiring, as well as Junior Development training. Adam also spends most of every Saturday during the season at the fields assisting with turf watering, technical officiating, coaching, and umpiring when required. Adam is a key volunteer for our association and his continuous efforts are very much appreciated.
ANGELA GROVES - WARWICK
During 2020 when COVID shut down so much in our community, Angela resiliently continued to keep the WHA community engaged and ensured the Association was able to provide a COVID safe competition for players and supporters once the green light was given to play. Without Ang, the 2020 season would have been a non-event. Players from Toowoomba Hockey Association (THA) opted to bring their junior players to Warwick to play.
At the height of COVID Ang introduced a 31-day social media interactive event to maintain engagement with players both young and old. She also arranged 2 invitational carnivals, one for U11 players and an U13 boys' event, which received such a positive response from all the associations and clubs which attended.
This is all on top of her volunteer role which includes, hours of planning for the season, organising coaches, the annual Condy Vet's 9s comp, the annual Primary School Comp, pre-season training, training for players trialing for school-based comps and the summer social comp for juniors and seniors.
JUNE NICHOLLS - IPSWICH
Without June Nicholls, Ipswich Hockey would not have returned in 2020. With a return possible, June did not hesitate, taking on the role of COVID Coordinator. Utilising her medical background, June approached the massive task of getting us back up and running professionally. It would be impossible to calculate the hours June spent keeping up to date as new directives etc. were released. As well as formulating and regularly updating our COVID Plan, June attended almost every training session throughout the week and games at the weekend to ensure our plan was adhered to while being the friendly face welcoming and reassuring everyone.
Thanks to June's tireless efforts, Ipswich Hockey was able to retain club memberships in 2020. June provided invaluable education and training and our volunteer base increased as team COVID coordinators were recruited. Being able to return also ensured the sustainability of Ipswich Hockey and her leadership and guidance as we developed our Safety Plan contributed greatly to the management and administration of our association. June's leadership was clearly on display and being able to return enabled us to promote our sport, not only locally but state-wide when we were able to successfully host the Qld School Sports 10-12 years State Championships; one of the very few championships conducted through 2020.

TOOWOOMBA U15 TOURNAMENT
During 2020 junior fixtures in Toowoomba were cancelled. Toowoomba Hockey Committee continued to run a training program for their junior athletes but with no fixtures and the cancelation of all State tittle's the Toowoomba junior players had nothing to aspire to. Taking this into consideration, THC developed the concept of the Toowoomba Invitational Under 15 tournament. The THC invited all Queensland associations as well as many club teams to participate in this event. We were overwhelmed by this response, with 38 teams, 90 games and two divisions in both boys and girls this event was the largest hockey tournament in Australia in 2020. THC also made sure we had qualified umpire and technical official mentors to provide leadership and education to in all aspects of the tournament. This was a huge task that was undertaken by the THC but the positive feedback from those that participated made it worth all the efforts involved.
TOWNSVILLE UMPIRE ACADEMY
The Townsville Hockey Umpire Academy was formed in the 2020 season to deliver a development pathway for all local aspiring umpires in Townsville. The Academy is run by head coordinators and utilises mentors and small groups for feedback. In 2020 the Academy consisted of over 65 umpires from Juniors to Seniors with a further growth again to 70+ registered Umpires and Officials in 2021.
Association Coach
AMY RYAN - BRISBANE WOMEN
In a year with no Representative Teams, it is difficult to recognise a volunteer association coach, so would like HQ to consider employee Amy Ryan our Member Development Manager.
While this is a paid position, Amy went above and beyond during the COVID shutdown to keep our Coaches engaged and learning. Using social media to share information and tips to players, coaches and umpires, in a dark time, it was a light for some people.
Amy's desire for excellent is evidenced by her participation in hockey at all levels with invitations to be involved in FIH, HA and HQ coaching/mentoring opportunities.
Amy had organised and completed Level 1 and 2 Coachings Courses, U13, U15, U18 and Masters development programs and Hookin2Hockey and Sport Sports before COVID hit, and upon the restart of fixtures organised the development for many players in October. This was all done on reduced hours and working under JobKeeper. Her dedication and excellence never waivered and BWHA is very luck to have her.
MICHAEL ASMUSSEN - SUNSHINE COAST
Michael Holds a HA Level 2 Coach accreditation. He embodies the #TeamQld values and SCHA culture we wish for all our members. Michael came to the call for help to Coach the SCHA Barbarians U18 Boys team for the local season, this team was made up of boys from various clubs who formed a SCHA team to allow the boys to play u18s. Michael did not hesitate to take this coaching role on when asked by SCHA. He is always a positive influence on the players he coaches and puts the game and the juniors as his priority. His dedication to the game and to this team earned them a spot in the Grand final and mutual respect from the players and SCHA Members.
AMANDA ROSS - TOOWOOMBA
Amanda is a level 2 coach and has been a long term coach and volunteer within Toowoomba Hockey. During 2020 junior fixtures in Toowoomba were cancelled, therefore we needed to somehow continue the development of hockey during these unprecedented times. Amanda Ross took the lead on this with our junior women's program. Amanda Ross ran several sessions with the junior female cohort every week, also taking on the role of Under 15 Team 1 girls coach, training and preparing these girls for the Under 15 Toowoomba Invitational Tournament. She was a huge part of our junior representative program and continued to coach and prepare our athletes for the State selection. It was an extremely difficult year in Toowoomba without junior fixtures or an RCD. It was in this period that Amanda Ross dedicated a huge amount of time to the junior women's program without her contribution we would not have been able to continue the growth of our junior female players.

Erin McCurley- Ault was one of these coaches. He has been involved with coaching and developing juniors for approximately 15years and at all playing levels (Minkeys, U11, U13, U15, J2) and in 2020 was integral in organizing, training and taking a group of Warwick boys to take part in the Toowoomba J2 comp with Newtown. He was also actively involved in training the WHA U13 boys rep team prior to the COVID shutdown.
He has been a permanent fixture alongside Ang Groves at Tuesday afternoon training sessions for our junior players throughout 2020, as he has done in the years before. Despite his crazy hour, demanding on-call type of job, he still fronts up to train the kids with a smile and great enthusiasm.
Ross sets a good example as a player himself, and has helped many juniors build the confidence to move into seniors. He umpires at all levels, volunteers without asking and without his involvement at WHA, there would be a huge gap.

Alisa also co-ordinated the Tech Officials for our Invitational Under 15 Tournament. Alisa worked extremely hard to train and supply a qualified Tech official on over 90 games over three days. Clubs/members supported our vision and helped assist us with change and progressing our association for the future. SCHA professional standard had lifted and and our tireless efforts to ensure we were doing everything possible for the game and our association throughout covid and when the season returned came to fruition.
WARWICK HA
We believe WHA encompasses the #TEAMQLD ideals, especially during the difficult year that was 2020.
As the smallest Association in Queensland, WHA was ready to play once restrictions lifted. We managed to play a full season in both the junior, mixed and senior competitions. We opened our Association up to everyone - people whose sports didn't restart post restrictions and players from Toowoomba Hockey Association. We warmly welcomed everyone - knowing that their time at WHA may have only been short before returning to their usual sports and we're excited to see that some of these players are returning to WHA in 2021.
The feedback from so many of these families throughout and at the end of the season was the icing on the cake for our efforts. We heard that WHA was a warm and welcoming environment where everyone pitched in to volunteer for their Association. We heard their kids loved the opportunity to play in our competition where they were accepted and welcomed with many friendships forged. We heard they were surprised that no-one was paid to do their job, that we were all volunteers who loved what we did. And we do. We created opportunities for players to play.
HQ INDOOR COMMIITTEE
After the cancellation of all the field hockey State Championships the opportunity to host Indoor State Championships was keenly met by the Indoor Committee. Not to be detered by the COVID restrictions the Committee set to work to ensure they delivered for the Indoor Community. They demonstrated the Team Queensland values by maintaining communicaiton with each other, the Office, the Indoor Associations and players. They worked for the best interests of hockey in Queensland by also creating a new Indoor Hockey Camp for those Athletes that would have travelled for Nationals. They put in an incredible amount of work to not only get the Championships up but also the camp and were diciplined to meet deadlines. Everyone on the Committee showed Leadership by bringing organisation, leadership and ambition to the season. And showed true resilience to adapt and change plans in the COVID environment, especially when the Brisbane Lockdown was announced just before the U18 camp was due to get underway.
