QLD UNDER 18 WOMEN FINISH THIRD
The Queensland Under 18 women’s hockey team took home the bronze medal on the final day of the Australian Championship in Brisbane today.
In a first half that saw the action move from one end of the field to the other multiple times, both Queensland and Western Australia missed many scoring opportunities in the opening thirty minutes of the match.
Western Australia opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with a goal off a penalty corner to Penny Squibb. The half time score remained at 1-0.
The second half started with Queensland missing a couple of genuine scoring opportunities off penalty corners. The Queenslanders finally broke through in the 43rd minute with a field goal to Ashleigh Mackay, levelling the scores at 1-1.
Western Australia had the best of possession and scoring opportunities late in the second half, but the Queenslanders’ defence was just too good.
Queensland secured the bronze medal at the Championship based on the fact that they finished above WA on the table at the conclusion of all round matches.
