QLD Under 18 Women defeat rivals NSW

— filed under:

Queensland’s Under 18 Women’s team have recorded a strong 3-0 victory over New South Wales in day two of the 2011 Australian Under 18 Women’s Championship at the State Hockey Centre this morning.

The win follows Queensland’s promising start to the tournament yesterday with a 3-0 win over the Northern Territory.

Queensland coach Sharyn Simpson said her team will take confidence from the win but there is still plenty of hockey to be played.

“We spent a considerable portion of the second half defending and so to keep New South Wales scoreless was a great result. I was particularly impressed with the girls’ penalty corner defence,” Sharyn said.

“New South Wales have been the state to beat Queensland in age national finals in the past years, so the win is very pleasing. Western Australia and Victoria will also be teams to beat this year,” she said.

Congratulations to Murphy Allendorf who opened the scoring with a field goal in the 28th minute to put the home side ahead 1-0 at half time, Queensland captain Tayler Evans who pushed her team to a 2-0 lead in the 62nd minute from a penalty corner, and Ashleigh Mackay who popped one in goal box to seal a Queensland victory in the 67th minute.

Best of luck to all teams yet to compete today.
