QLD U21M DOWN TAS IN FIRST NATIONALS MATCH

qld u21m '11Well done to QLD Under 21 Men who defeated TAS 6-3 in their first match of the 2011 Australian Under 21 Men's Championship. Jacob Webber scored 4 goals and Matt Gohdes netted two.

Below is the match report:

Tasmania and Queensland both came out firing in an even first half at Perth Hockey Stadium. In the first few minutes both teams had scored a penalty corner and the game swayed between both goals.

Within 3 minutes the first penalty was well flicked by Jacob Webber. The second to Tasmania soon after was saved by the goalie but Dougal Middleton reversed the deflection to even the tally.

In the 21st minute a Tassie cross from the left flew through all in the circle to find Doug Middleton on the right post who made the score 2-1 to Tasmania.

A few minutes later the ball was at the other end and a penalty was again converted by Webber. The score then remained at 2-2 until half time.

Five minutes into the second half a penalty seemed to be awarded to Queensland for talking back from Tasmania. The penalty stroke was again a lightening drag flick by Webber.

This changed the tempo of the game and Queensland stepped up the pace. In the next stage of play Daniel Beale crossed the ball right and Webber received and scored his and Queensland’s 4th Goal.

In the 60th minute Queensland’s Mat Gohdes received the ball at the top of the circle and scooped it high over the goalie and into the net making the score 2-5.

In the next exchange of play, Gohdes runs the length of the field and from the far right finds the far left net.

Tasmania never gave up and with 5 minutes to go William Lawler crossed to Angus Boulton who goaled their third. This narrowed the score to 6-3 in Queensland’s favour.
