The Canberra Labor Club Strikers came out strong in their match against the OAMPS Queensland Scorchers holding most of the possession in the opening half of the game. The Scorchers however scored against the flow of the play with a field goal by Kandice Olivieri, twelve minutes into the game.
The Strikers soon evened the score with a brilliant solo goal by New Zealand international, Katie Glynn who eliminated up to five players before flicking a goal past Scorchers goal keeper Megan Lawrence into the left side corner.
The second half continued to be a fast and physical match with both teams fighting hard to get goals on the board.
Scorchers attackers secured numerous short corner penalties forcing Strikers defender Anna Flanagan to save multiple shots on the post keeping her side in the game. Some quick scrambling around the goal circle paid off for Scorchers striker Renee Ashton when she slotted a goal in the 60th minute.
The scorchers missed and open shot at goal but managed to make up for the miss with a penalty corner conversion minutes later.
Strikers kept up the pace and maintained in strong contention with a superb breakaway play by defender Edwina Bone setting up an easy tap around the goal keeper to reduce the gap. But it was not enough to save the match, with the Scorchers notching up another victory.
OAMPS QLD Scorchers 2 def Victorian Vipers 1 (half time 2-0)
Goals
QLD: Amy Korner 8M FG Kandice Olivieri 14M PC
VIC: Danielle Schubach 39M PC
The OAMPS Queensland Scorchers started their first half hard and fast against the Victorian Vipers forcing four penalty corners in quick succession in the opening minutes of the game.
The Vipers defence faltered in the eighth minute of the game when Amy Korner slotted a field goal for the OAMPS Scorches. This was followed by a second goal minutes later by Kandice Olivieri as a result of a penalty corner breakdown, leaving the OAMPS Scorchers two goals up at half time.
The Vipers came out blazing in the second half to take back control of the game forcing the OAMPS Scorchers goal keeper Emily Burrows to make some fast saves in the early minutes of the second half. Their defence couldn’t sustain the pressure and Vipers striker Danielle Schubach converted a penalty corner breakdown to score in the 5th minute.
The Vipers dominated for most of the half but the OAMPS Scorchers managed to hold on. Queensland’s last ditch surge in the final 10 minutes of the game put some much needed pressure on the Vipers defence. The Vipers however refused to give up and fought back hard threatening to score, but couldn’t convert to even the scores.
