Australian Hockey League – Cairns, Round 2 Women

OAMPS Queensland Scorchers 5 Vs Tasmanian Van Demons 0

Day two of round two of the Australian Hockey League (AHL) continued at the Cairns Hockey Centre on a characteristically steamy Cairns afternoon.  The teams were the OAMPS Queensland Scorchers and the Tasmanian Van Demons and from the start of the game it could be seen that both teams were hungry for a win.

The first half began with chances at each end but neither side could convert, thanks in part to an excellent save from Queensland goalkeeper Emily Burrows.  Soon the ball was back in Tasmania’s half and Queensland capitalised with a fantastic goal from Renaee Ashton in the 14th minute.  This seemed to boost the Queenslanders and in the 20th minute Jodie Schultz slapped a great shot into the net.

The score remained 2-0 to Queensland for the rest of the first half, although Tasmania was close to scoring at several points.

The afternoon had cooled slightly for the commencement of the second half and more fast paced hockey resulted.  The cooler temperatures also seemed to boost the Tasmanians’ as their tempo seemed to lift.  However this could not be sustained and Queensland’s Tegan Holcroft scored in the 55th minute after some great pressure.

Queensland scored again in the 63rd minute from a great penalty corner (Kandice Olivieri) and again in the 68th minute when Jill Dwyer capitalised on some space near the goal.

Final Score, QLD 5 TAS 0
