QUEENSLAND SCORCHERS BEATEN IN AHL FINAL

The Queensland Scorchers were defeated 2-1 this afternoon by the in form WA Diamonds, who never looked troubled in the Grand Final at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.

The win gave the Western Australians their second AHL win in as many years against the Scorchers and their third in four years.

The Queenslanders started the game nervously, and the Diamonds took advantage of the home team’s shaky start scoring a lucky penalty corner in the ninth minute when captain Emily Halliday’s hit bounced into goal keeper Carla Hunter and rolled over her body and into the net.

Queensland pulled themselves back into the game in the 21st minute when Angie Lambert scored a penalty corner when her first slow hit rebounded off the keeper, and her second attempt whizzed past the defense and slammed into the back of the net.

The Diamonds came out quickly after the half time break, catching the Scorchers defense off guard and scoring a field goal after just two minutes back on the field.

Despite the Queenslanders having significantly more attempts at goal than the Diamonds, including four consecutive penalty corners within two minutes, they were unable to penetrate the Western Australia defense.

This year’s loss is the eighth Australian Hockey League Grand Final defeat for the Scorchers in ten appearances over the last fourteen years.
