QUEENSLAND SCORCHERS TOO CLASSY FOR ADELAIDE SUNS

The Queensland Scorchers guaranteed their spot in the first semi-final with a solid 5-0 win over the Adelaide Suns in the last round game of the Australian Hockey League tonight at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.

The win handed the home team the minor premiership for the AHL and a game against fourth placed Victoria Vipers at 12.30pm on Saturday.

Queensland’s Australian representatives Angie Lambert, Suzie Faulkner and Mel Twitt led the way for the Scorchers, with Faulkner scoring two of the team’s five goals.

The Scorchers mixed their penalty corner set plays, demonstrating the depth of the team in the attacking line, while both goal keepers, Carla Hunter and Millie Russell made on field appearances and midfielder Lauren Richards was rested.

Cairns striker Shannon Bain scored the game’s first goal in the 20th minute when a powerful hit from Lambert found Bain undefended in the goal, and she pushed the ball into the opposite goal corner.  Faulkner’s first goal came just four minutes later when a double dummy at a penalty corner tricked the Suns’ defence and Faulkner scored when her flick pass touched the edge of the goalie’s glove.

The Scorchers came out strongly in the first minute of the second half when Lambert again hit from a penalty corner to Dannette Boland who scored in a similar manner to Faulkner’s goal before the break. The home team’s fourth goal came from a trademark Lambert hit on a penalty corner which bounced between the defence and goal keeper.

Faulkner put the game beyond doubt in the 55th minute with the minor premier’s fifth goal after she was again left unmarked in the goal circle and beat the keeper with an easy shot across the goal circle.

The Scorchers next game is in the first semi final against Victoria Vipers at 12.30pm on Saturday at the State Hockey Centre.

If they win on Saturday, the Scorchers will play in the AHL Grand Final on Sunday at 2.30pm.
