Australian Hockey League – Cairns, Round 2 Women

The Darwin Airport Resort Territory Pearls Vs New South Wales Arrows

Day two of round two of the Australian Hockey League (AHL) began at the Cairns Hockey Centre, with the Darwin Airport Resort Territory Pearls playing the New South Wales Arrows on a characteristically steamy Cairns afternoon.

The first half began with tight play from both teams with opportunities at each end of the field, however a period of sustained pressure from NSW saw Jade Close break the Territory’s defensive line and score an exceptional goal in the 23rd minute.  This was followed by another great running field goal from NSW captain Megan Rivers in the 26th minute.

For the remainder of the first half NSW continued to pressure NT at their end of the field and again were rewarded with a great one touch goal from Jade Close in the 33rd minute.

NT defended exceptionally for the start of the second half stopping several NSW attempts at goal, but they could only hold out until the 47th minute when Stephanie Purdy managed to get one past NT goalkeeper Elizebeth Duguid.  In the 63rd minute it was Purdy again who converted the only penalty corner goal of the match.

NT did have its chances in the second half but could not convert them into points.

Final Score, NT 0 NSW 5
